Williamsburg's First Women's Sports Bar

Blazer's Cofounders Chandler, Caroline, and Debany
She Plays NYC sat down with Caroline, one of the founders of Blazer's, a bold, community-first sports bar dedicated to women’s sports that opened in 2025. Read our interview below!
So, Caroline, do you think you could start by telling the story of how Blazers came to be?
Me and my two co-owners all kind of became friends because we were going to Liberty games together. We bonded over the Liberty, and it was at a time in our lives when we were in jobs that weren’t fulfilling, and we thought there was maybe something else out there for us.
The Sports Bra, which was one of the first—maybe the first—women’s sports bars, had just opened in Portland at the time, and it seemed like the coolest thing ever.
So we were like, “Let’s just go for it. The timing’s right. We’re all in New York. We’re loving women’s sports. It’s having a moment.” That was three years ago. We all kind of met in the summer of 2023.
Could you tell us a little bit about the name?
We came up with the name because we were really thinking about what we wanted the bar to represent. We kept talking about these trailblazing athletes, these women that we had looked up to when we were growing up and that were so impactful in this country and globally. Blazers comes from the word “trailblazer,” so it kind of honors that. It’s also a little bit of an homage to the blaze on the Statue of Liberty, as the torch. It’s that blaze.

I like that. There are murals on the wall in the bar. Is there a story behind that?
We have a big mural that says “Blazers,” and there are six women athletes painted throughout it. That came to be because one of my co-founders, Chandler, was in the women’s sports bar in Long Beach, and the artist who had done a mural for them happened to be there at the same time. They struck up a conversation, and it turned out she’s from New Jersey, so it was really easy to get her to fly here and do one for us.
Then we have a room called the Trailblazer Room, and that was done by a couple of local Brooklyn artists. It’s a bunch of women athletes, and you can go in there, and there’s a mirror where you can take a selfie. It’s a really fun room.
Before this, you were an attorney. Does that shape your view of women’s sports equity at all?
Stuff like misogyny and sexism kind of exists in all industries, unfortunately. So in that respect, yeah. But I think what has more shaped my view is the media that I intake and what I’ve been interested in outside of law. I practiced law for about three years, and it had nothing to do with sports at all. But that was really my interest. I feel like I’m knowledgeable to an extent just because I’ve been following these storylines for a while and listening to different podcasts.
Well, I'm glad you followed your interest! Good luck with Blazer's and thank you so much.
You’re welcome. Let me know if you need anything else or if you ever want to come by the bar. Let me know. We’d be happy to have you.
